Randy Pausch lecture was a speech about achieving your childhood dreams. I was impressed with his public speaking ability. He made me laugh in the beginning. This was after he went over the seriousness of this being his last lecture because he has a brain tumor. Then he went on to talk about his childhood dreams. The key he said was to have specific dreams. His first dream was being in zero gravity.
His first dream was being in zero gravity. So he kept trying to apply to get into the plane that simulates zero gravity for 25 seconds. Eventually he got on and was everything he hoped it would be. His second dream was the to play in the NFL. This was one of the few goals he did not achieve. The third goal he had was to work on ideas with Disney. This he described as one of the best jobs of his life.
He enjoyed it so much that it gave him an idea to teach a new course. This course was based on creating a new virtual world. He gave an assignment to groups in the class and gave them two weeks to work on it. When the students turned in their projects Mr Pausch was shocked. The students had done more on this project than he would have expected them to do in an entire semester. He told them that they have not quite reached there potential because clearly there is no limit on what they can do.
Him and a buddy of his then set out to make a masters course. This course involved no books and was all done in small groups. The students made four different virtual worlds a year. The students also took field trips to places like Pixar and other film companies. In fact the class did such a good job it got six guarantees from companies to hire students who passed the class. Overall I would say Mr Pausch achieved his childhood dreams.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo
